Did you ever drink from a plastic bottle and see a triangle symbol on the bottom
with a number inside?

Do you know what the number stands for?
Did you guess that it’s just for recycling?
Then you are WRONG !!!!!!
THE NUMBER TELLS YOU THE CHEMICAL MAKE UP OF THE PLASTIC…..

1) Polyethylene terephalate (PET)
2) High density polyethylene (HDPE)
3) Unplasticised polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) or Plasticised polyvinyl chloride (PPVC)
4) Low density polyethylene LDPE
5) Polypropylene (PP)
6) Polystyrene (PS) or Expandable polystyrene (EPS)
7) Other, including nylon and acrylic

What you are not told is that many of the plastics used are toxic and the chemicals used

to create a plastic can leach out of the plastic and into the food/drink.Think about it,

how many times have you or a friend said “I don’t like this, it taste like the plastic bottle ….

THAT’S BECAUSE YOU ARE TASTING THE PLASTIC
The WORST ONESare Nos: 3, 6, and 7!!!
DO NOT USE THESE NUMBERS if stated at the bottom of the bottle) !!!

Check out this chart that breaks down the plastic, its uses and chemical makeup
(I find #7 a little scary)

Microwaving plastic containers affects the chemical make up of the plastic,

allowing the chemical substances to destabilize and leach out more quickly into

the food you are reheating. You can check out this article that ran in the Wall Street Journal:

popepope

This fiery figure is being hailed as Pope John Paul II making an appearance beyond the grave.

The image, said by believers to show the Holy Father with his right hand raised in blessing, was spotted during a ceremony in Poland to mark the second anniversary of his death.

Details appeared on the Vatican News Service, a TV station in Rome which specialises in religious news broadcasts.

Service director Jarek Cielecki, a Polish priest and close friend of John Paul II, travelled to Poland after hearing an onlooker had photographed the image.

Father Cielecki said he was convinced the picture showed the former pontiff.

“You can see the image of a person in the flames and I think it is the servant of God, Pope John Paul II,” he said.

The pictures were being broadcast continuously on Italian TV and also posted on religious websites, some of which crashed as thousands logged on to see for themselves the eerie figure formed by the flames.

The bonfire was lit during a service at Beskid Zywiecki, close to John Paul’s birthplace at Katowice, southern Poland, on April 2 – the second anniversary of his death.

Hundreds had attended the ceremony. Gregorz Lukasik, the Polish man who took the photographs, said: “It was only afterwards when I got home and looked at the pictures that I realised I had something.

“I showed them to my brother and sister and they, like me, were convinced the flames had formed the image of Pope John Paul II.

“I was so happy with the picture that I showed it to our local bishop who said that Pope John Paul had made many pilgrimages during his life and he was still making them in death.”

How do you explain the fact that the fish turn at every corner, a ‘magnet’ would just pull them around and it would be a big magnet in order for the fish to be unable to resist its force…Goldfish can be trained, but why bother????

setarbak

Neatorama reader Burhan told us about this coffee shop in Malaysia, which name is a play of Starbucks (pronounced Setarbak in Malay, Kopi means coffee). At least they kept the green color! Found at Critical Thoughts – Thanks Burhan!

ASHLEY

Ashley Beghtel advocates deaf culture by sharing her own life experience

Miss Deaf America is an ambassador, a spokeswoman and a role model. Next year, she may also be a University alumna.

Next summer, Ashley Beghtel, a senior in the College of Education’s Family and Human Services program, will represent Oregon at the biennial national competition in New Orleans.

“I want to show that by winning this title,” she said, “I can do anything hearing people can do.”

In June, Beghtel was crowned Miss Deaf Oregon at the Salem Conference Center.

Her win was partially based on “Dare to Dream,” her presentation about playing lacrosse and being the first deaf female NCAA Division I athlete.

“That was my passion,” Beghtel said. “I didn’t have to memorize any lines, it just came straight from the heart.”

Beghtel, who has been deaf since she contracted spinal meningitis as a baby, grew up playing soccer. She was eventually introduced to lacrosse by her brother, who played at Southridge High School in their hometown of Beaverton, Ore.

“I found out about lacrosse and said, ‘Oh, that’s what I’m going to be about; I’m on it,” Beghtel said.

Though she started her college career at Western Oregon University, Beghtel transferred to the University during the spring term of 2004 to play lacrosse. Communicating with her teammates was difficult at first, she said.

“People had never had experience with the deaf community before me, so it was a big challenge,” she said.

She added that many of her teammates later studied American Sign Language, which Jo Larson teaches at the University.

Larson, a communication disorders & sciences instructor, had two deaf parents, and grew up speaking ASL before she learned English.

She said it’s important to raise awareness because there are so many misconceptions about deaf people.

Last week was Deaf Awareness Week and on Sunday, the Eugene Public Library set up a free viewing of “Through Deaf Eyes,” a PBS documentary exploring the history and culture of deaf life in the United States.

Technical difficulties prevented the closed captioning from working. As there were many deaf people in the audience who rely on the captions, Ilana Sophia, the reference librarian who set up the program, scrapped the documentary in favor of a panel discussion.

“It was really fantastic,” Sophia said. “It was really educational for everyone; we all learned from this.”

One featured panelist was Linda Collins, who owns Accessibility Northwest, an ASL interpreter agency in Eugene. Collins said she doesn’t think one week is enough.

“Deaf awareness should be all the time, not just a week,” she said.

The University’s Disability Services also provides interpreters and other resources for deaf students, such as FM listening systems. FM systems are two-part assisted listening devices.

“You have a transmitter and receiver so it’s like a little sound system,” explained Molly Sirois, an counselor with Disability Services. “It’s like a little microphone that the instructor wears and a receiver that the student wears.”

Beghtel said it’s nice that the University has support for those who need it, deaf or otherwise.

Some of her favorite aspects of being Miss Deaf Oregon include being a positive role model for the deaf community and raising awareness.

“I feel better able to spread the word among everyone about the positivity deaf people can share with other people,” she said.

YouTube has a live cochlear implant operation on video. The surgery was performed in July at Tampa General Hospital by Loren Bartels, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director of the Tampa Bay Hearing and Balance Center, and Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. It is narrated and runs 55 minutes long. Two caveats: it is not for the squeamish and it is not captioned, much to my dismay.

Bacolod, Philipphines, 18 September, 2007-The police yesterday said they may seek the help of a psychiatrist in the case of a 16-year-old girl, who is deaf and unable to speak, who was reportedly raped by her father and is now pregnant in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Kabankalan City police commander, Chief Inspector Calixto Mabugat told the DAILY STAR they are working with social workers to assess the mental health of the minor who was endorsed to them by her teachers Friday.

He said they will probably seek the help of a psychiatrist to subject the girl to therapy as she keeps changing her testimony while being interviewed by women’s and children’s concerns desk officers yesterday.

Calixto added that the medico legal officer’s findings showed that the teenager’s genitals had lacerations but they still cannot conclude she was raped. The girl’s father denied the accusations when he was invited for questioning yesterday.

Reports said the suspect is at the same time also the girl’s grandfather because he had also raped the teenager’s mother, his daughter, before.

Calixto had earlier sought the help of interpreters in communicating with the minor.

He said the girl has been turned over to her relatives in another house.

Meanwhile, the police yesterday said they are now searching for a resident of Bacolod City who reportedly raped a 17-year-old girl after meeting her in a convenience store in Bacolod City early Saturday.

Bacolod City Police Office director Senior Supt. Ronilo Quebrar said they are now looking for an 18-year-old man whose name is being withheld, who fled after molesting the teenager.

Reports said the girl met the man in a convenience store Saturday with some of her male friends and was raped in an undisclosed place after they separated from the group.

Last month, a 14-year-old girl was also raped by her friends during a rugby sniffing session in Bacolod City.

Quebrar called on women, particularly minors, to observe precautions in dealing with male friends, especially when they don’t know them well.*PP
